Datsun GO Overview

Datsun Go is the model which marked the entry of the Japanese brand in the country. The car which was first introduced in 2014, was pitched in the affordable hatchback segment and was able to grab a slight share of pie in the class. However, the overall response of the car was lukewarm since its inception so the carmaker decided to give a major update in 2018. The new Datsun GO has been launched with an impressive list of updates this time around. The car now looks a bit more upmarket from inside and out with the mechanicals remaining the same. The hatchback was also been high criticized on the safety ground but now the carmaker has responded rightly to the feedback by giving a major update in this department too. The new Datsun GO gets a range of updates and it seems the carmaker has done a pretty good job. At the front, the signature hexagonal grille feature new mesh and the bumper now looks more angular and sportier than ever, giving the front fascia a nice touch. The Japanese automaker has also fitted LED DRLs which further gives the car more personality. Coming to the side profile, the thing immediately comes to notice is the new set of 14-inch diamond cut alloy wheels with fatter tyres enhancing the side stance of the car. They do look so much pretty that you would think worth stretching your budget a little. Things remain pretty much the same at the rear except the new grey strip beneath the number plate and a nice chrome strip at the base of the boot lid. Other than this, the car gets a new Amber orange colour option which does complement the whole styling package. Other colour options remain the same namely Ruby Red, Bronze Grey, Crystal Silver and Opal White.

Similar is the case with the Indian car market. The sub 4-metre and the small size engine duty have made the business a bit too complicated for car manufacturers. Compact-size sedans and even SUVs are making their way, with some compromise. However, Datsun has introduced a larger hatch called as the Datsun GO+. It is being marketed as a compact utility vehicle and does it do that? We take it for a weekend camping trip and find out how much of the addition exists.

The PLUS stands for the larger boot and additional third row of seating. The Datsun GO+ is based on the GO, and it shows the striking resemblance. The fascia’s of both are the same and the body design is the same till the rear door. After which the belt line rises as you move towards the rear and even the wheel haunches are protuberant. The blacked-out door pillar after the rear door (C-pillar) has a lesser glass area and this makes it very prominent. The roof also gently slopes downwards towards the rear. The boot lid of the Datsun GO+ is a new body part and the tail lamps are the same as the GO. The rear bumper looks stylish and does look muscular.

The length of the Datsun GO is under 4 metres, so it is as long as the Honda Amaze and Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire. However, what this offers is extra flexibility with another row of seating or a humongous boot, when compared to the compact sedans and SUVs. As the ground clearance is the same, it drives like any other compact car and is easy to manoeuvre through tight city lanes with a turning radius of 4.6 metres.

Datsun GO Cabin

Get inside the Datsun GO+ and the first two rows are exactly the same as the GO. The fit and finish is good and plastic quality is decent. In the top-of-the-line variant “T”, the GO+ gets front power windows, mobile docking station connected to two speakers, electric power steering and air-con. If your smartphone is larger than 5.2-inches then the docking station cannot hold it. All the three rows have fixed headrest. In terms of features it misses out on basic things like rear wiper and maybe even rear defogger for improved rear visibility in monsoon and winters. The A variant doesn’t get the mobile docking station, or power windows or the electric power steering also.

The first row is spacious and it has a bench-like seat, for storage of excess luggage next to the driver and the co-driver. Some believe that three people can sit in the front row, but that isn’t the case, as the gear lever will make seating uncomfortable. The second row has generous headroom, but knee room is just fine for tall people. The thigh support too could have been better, but this is one of the best in its segment.

The third row is strictly for kids, and even Datsun calls this as a 5+2. There is barely any head room, knee room or should room for adults. With the third row raised, the boot size is a mere 48 litres and when the seats are flipped the space is 347 litres. One can even flip the second row of seats and further increase the loading space. Datsun GO Performance

The spec sheet remains the same as before. The car comes powered with the same 1.2L 3-cylinder naturally aspirated 12V DOHC EFI petrol engine that produces 68PS and 104Nm of peak torque with the same 5-speed manual transmission doing its duty for transferring the power to the front wheels. This is the same unit that powers Nissan Micra Active and remains the biggest in its class in terms of power and performance.

The engine remains enthusiastic as before with high power to weight ratio. The hatch offers peppy and fun to drive experience especially if the engine is dragged to its redline. A small hitch comes due to limited low-rpm pulling potential. So, one has to really push the accelerator a little hard to get going. But this is something of advantage when you are travelling jam packed or handling the ghats. If you continue to get going, you would not face any problems whizzing in and out of the traffic.

However, the newer model is not as quick as compared to the previous version. Why? Because of the added 150kg of weight and on open stretches the car would run out of breath. And here you would need to plan overtake in advance. But there is nothing to worry much as these cars are meant for pottering within the city premises. Coming to the NVH levels, the carmaker seems to have taken the nasty feedbacks seriously. The engine sound is muffled right to some extent but it does get thrummy if you push it hard. The refinement levels in the facelift has been bettered, there is more cladding so those small pebbles and stones hitting the underbody are now better controlled.

Being a small hatchback, fuel efficiency becomes one of the top priorities. Nothing has changed in the mileage figures though, the new Datsun GO returns the ARAI certified mileage of 19.83 kms for a liter of fuel which is good looking at class it falls in.

Datsun GO Driving

The suspension set up on the GO is pliant for our roads. The ride isn’t very plush but it is comfy enough unless the roads get really bad. The suspension travel is long and the GO siblings have a significant amount of body roll, which feels even more pronounced in the GO+ and sudden lane changes aren’t confidence inspiring. The steering doesn’t provide much feedback and is kind of vague. Braking performance is also pretty average and pedal doesn’t have a sharp bite.

Datsun GO Safety

The braking bite is average and the pedal doesn’t have a sharp bite as there in the competition. The most interesting update comes in the safety department and Datsun might have really surprised many in the auto industry. The carmaker has loaded the new Datsun with standard features such as dual airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, follow me headlamps and rear parking sensors. This is certainly par with the segment above cars and might attract more first time buyers. So, it seems Datsun has taken the right step in the right direction.

Datsun GO Bottomline

The Datsun GO siblings feel better than before now but there is still a lot of room for improvement. If you really need a 7-seater on a tight budget, the GO+ is the only choice in the market but if you just need a regular hatchback, the GO is a decent proposition if the car will be used strictly within the city. Hyundai is going to launch the all new Santro very soon and this is one car that is likely to have an upper hand over the GO. Cars like the Tata Tiago also make for a good choice, if you can stretch your budget slightly.

The Japanese firm despite of all these additions, has priced the car quite sensibly. The new Datsun GO starts from Rs. 3.29 lakhs while top of the line variant is tagged at Rs. 4.89 lakhs, ex-showroom. Looking at the drastic changes this time, it seems Maruti Celerio, Tata Tiago, Maruti Wagon R and 2018 Hyundai Santro will be having tough time ahead. The new Datsun GO feels a more healthy and interesting package and goes beyond the stigma of an unsafe car. In short, it has become easier to recommend than before.
