After the Aspire, it was time for the second-gen Figo to receive its midlife update. These updates usually address major issues plaguing pre-facelift models. So, what could be the need of the hour for the Figo? A heart transplant? Yes, the petrol-powered pre-facelift Figo was uninspiring and lethargic, unlike its diesel counterpart with a drool-worthy punchy engine. To counter that, Ford has now introduced its new Dragon family of petrol engines in the updated Figo along with some minor styling and feature updates. Are these changes enough to put the Figo back as an option worth considering? We took the updated Figo for a spin in sunny Jodhpur to find out.

The cosmetic upgrades on the 2019 Figo may feel subtle in these shots, but in the flesh, it looks fresh especially when viewed head-on. There’s a sportier honeycomb mesh grille that’s not only finished in glossy-black, but now fills the grille in entirety. Besides that, the lower bumper now has a more angular design, along with a snazzy fog lamp surround that’s finished in a bright matt blue shade.

While the silhouette is similar to the outgoing model, you’ll still notice the new shape 15-inch alloys finished in glossy-black (in Blu version). At the rear, only the mildly restyled lower section of the bumper catches your attention. We have to admit that all these tweaks make the 2019 Ford Figo more attractive than ever. In fact, when spotted from a distance, the new Blu variant (in white paint), is similar to the older Figo ‘Sports’ version.

If you find it hard to see the changes on the outside, we bet you won’t say the same once you step inside and that is mainly thanks to the new 7 inch touch infotainment system. This makes the dashboard look cleaner thanks to lesser number of physical buttons. The infotainment system isn’t the Sync 3 you find on the Freestyle and the Aspire. Which isn’t such a big problem until you realise that there aren’t any phone mirroring features. So no android auto, no apple CarPlay and no mirror link either, which has now become a norm at this price range.

The Blu variant, on the inside, comes with blue accents on the door pads and contrasting blue stitching on the seats. Thankfully it doesn’t look over the top. In terms of quality, there are no soft touch plastics in the cabin and even the graining looks a tad cheap compared to the Grand i10 or even the Swift. However, this isn’t a deal breaker and on its own, the quality is acceptable. In terms of seating comfort, it comes with the same space as the old car and the front seats are wide enough and comfortable. The rear,seat doesn’t have the same amount of space unlike those of its competitors, but still it is quite comfy with decent thigh support and adequate knee room. Unlike the old car, the new Figo also gets adjustable rear headrests, which is a great addition in terms of safety and comfort.

The boot, at 257 litres, is large enough and the rear seat can be folded for added space. A split folding rear seat though would have been welcome. There is a good amount of storage space upfront with large door pockets and a number of small storage spaces. But at the rear you feel short changed as there is very little storage except for the seatback pockets and a single cup holder.

In terms of equipment, the Figo comes well equipped. It has premium features like automatic headlamps and rain sensing wipers on the top Blu variant. Another thing to point out is that the touchscreen infotainment system comes as standard in all three variants. It does miss out on features like LED headlamps, daytime running lamps and phone mirroring features on the infotainment system which is offered on rival products. But it more than makes up for that, by offering best-in-class 6 airbags on the top variant.

Coming to the most significant update in the Figo, its new set of petrol engines from Ford’s newest ‘Dragon’ family. There’s a 1.2-litre and a 1.5-litre petrol engine on offer, both 3-cylinder units. The former is offered with a manual, while the latter is exclusively available with an automatic. The petrol powertrain options are, in fact, completely fresh for the updated Figo as Ford has introduced the new 5-speed manual gearbox for the 1.2-litre as well as a 6-speed torque converter for the 1.5-litre, replacing the previous 6-speed DCT (dual-clutch automatic). The diesel engine has been carried forward from the pre-facelift model as is. However, it has also received the new 5-speed manual.

The new 1.2-litre petrol as well as the diesel, while the 1.5-litre petrol automatic wasn’t available. Let us begin with petrol first. We’ve already encountered the 1.2-litre three-cylinder Dragon petrol on the Freestyle and most recently, the Aspire facelift. It is a huge, huge improvement over the old four-cylinder unit of the same displacement. And the updated Figo turned out to be no different. Being a three-cylinder engine, the new 1.2-litre purrs to life with a mild vibratory cold start. But it gets fairly smooth in no time. The engine is fairly refined given the segment standards and has a sweet note when pushed hard. The engine isn’t that responsive initially, but that doesn’t mean it requires frequent downshifts as it pulls cleanly in higher gears. The engine changes character around 3000rpm as it begins to surge ahead eagerly as it offers a pretty meaty mid-range. Just like other small displacement naturally-aspirated engines, it needs to be revved to extract the most out of it.

Keep it in its sweet spot and the new three-cylinder engine won’t disappoint. Power comes linearly and in a tractable manner till it maxes out just below the redline at 7000rpm. Out on the highway, the Figo is capable of hitting triple-digit speeds rapidly and its brakes are confidence-inspiring. This is expected because the Freestyle and the Aspire, based on the same platform, display these traits as well.

The diesel continues to shine with its outright power and torque, which are the best in the segment. From the get-go, the diesel pulls and pulls and pulls with hardly any turbo lag. We won’t be focusing much on the diesel as it has been carried forward, but continues to be among the strongest points for the Figo. Enriching the whole experience is the new slick-shifting 5-speed manual from Getrag. Available with both the new petrol and the diesel, it slots in much better than the older one.

When it comes to ride and handling, the Ford Figo remains as strong as before. The steering is direct and it is eager to change direction too. The Figo feels a little soft initially and body roll is gentle but not excessive. In fact, the suppleness doesn’t come at the expense of stability and even at high speeds on an undulating surface, the Figo feels rock solid. In terms of comfort too, this Ford shows great composure, whether it be at high or low speeds and the ride quality is flat and it absorbs the worst of road conditions with aplomb. Even the brakes feel strong and the pedal feel is sharp yet progressive.

The updated Figo is available with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, front seatbelts reminder and rear parking sensors as standard across the variant lineup. Ever since its launch, the City has been a pillar of Honda’s success in India, a darling of the Indian car buyer and, more often than not, the class best-seller. But this title has been under threat lately with stiff competition from Maruti’s Ciaz. Right on cue, Honda has launched the 2017 City with revised styling, new features and a new variant line-up.

The City gets a new top ZX trim which comes only as a petrol automatic or diesel manual; and not as a petrol manual. The ZX brings a number of new and sought-after features to the Honda mid-sizer, which should help it appeal more to those who simply must have the latest kit. Prices for the updated City start at Rs 8.49 lakh for the base petrol and go up to Rs 13.56 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the top end diesel.

A larger touchscreen infotainment system dominated the centre part of the dash. and this has better resolution too. The system has HDMI input and MirrorLink as well. There is more than sufficient space in the 2017 City. The front row seats are comfortable and spacious. There is ample of head room and leg room. The seats have good comfort and are good enough even for long distance travel. The rear seats are also spacious and have good amount of comfort too. The City continues to be powered by the same set of petrol and diesel engines. The 1.5 litre i-DTEC engine that makes 100hp and 200Nm delivers great low-end performance and is smooth and linear in a very un-diesel-like way, but rev it hard and it becomes rather noisy. Honda claims to have added more insulation for lowering the NVH levels in the diesel, and, though it is a marked improvement, there’s only so much that could be done to curb what is inherently a noisy engine. Ambient sounds have gone down a bit, but the diesel engine rattle is still an issue.The petrol option is of course the tried and tested naturally-aspirated 1.5 i-VTEC engine developing 119hp and 145Nm. The motor is still a riot for enthusiasts, revving out eagerly to its red line and making a lot of its power at the top end. It’s quite usable at the bottom end too and, as the revs climb, it can get a bit vocal.

Gearbox options remain the same as well with a six-speed manual for the diesel and a choice between five-speed manual or seven-step CVT automatic for the petrol. With India’s crowded roads and newfound fondness for automatics, it’s sad that the City doesn’t offer such an option on the diesel, but that’s just something that will perhaps have to wait for the next generation.With no mechanical changes to the suspension either, the ride remains largely the same, which is to say agreeable by class standards, but not the class best. There’s still a fair bit of roll around corners and the ride quality can get a bit choppy at times. The top ZX variants do get new 16-inch alloys and wider tyres, and thankfully they don’t seem to have hurt the ride quality at all. As for the handling, we didn’t get much of a chance to test it on Delhi’s wide, smooth and straight roads, so the verdict is still out on that one. Check car loan for Honda City at Fincarz.

There are no tweaks for the suspension as well in the updated model and we feel it doesn’t need it either. The City has got a very balanced setup, which offers pliant ride quality and nimble handling. The ride might feel a tad stiff at low speeds but it flattens up as you gain speed. The high speed stability is good but you might feel the need of wider tyres. Handling is quite engaging and the City feels eager to dart into corners but again, the undertyred setup tends to lose some grip when you push the car to its limit.

The steering makes you feel connected to the road and there is no sense of numbness. It is quick to respond and offers decent feedback. The body roll is well controlled and you don’t get tossed around much on the twisties. Ground clearance is not a big issue in the fourth generation City, it rarely touches the underbelly on big bumps and potholes. Braking performance is good and the pedal bite is confidence inspiring too.

Honda City Safety

Thankfully, more and more manufacturers are taking safety seriously nowadays and so is Honda. The City facelift gets dual airbags and Anti-lock brakes along with electronic brake-force distribution as a standard fitment. The Hyundai Xcent hasn’t been a blockbuster product for the Korean carmaker. Sure, it sells around 2,500 units or thereabouts on a monthly basis, which is exactly what most other compact sedans like the Ford Aspire, the Tata Zest and the Volkswagen Ameo sell. So, no fire there.

But, when you consider that Hyundai has the second largest market share in the passenger car segment, and most of its other successful models (read the Grand i10 and the Creta) sell in excess of 10,000 units a month, one simply can’t term the Xcent a success. Hyundai, understandably, wants to change that.

Right on cue then, three years after the Xcent was first launched, here’s the facelifted version of the car. Hyundai believes, with the styling changes and the addition of a few more features, the Xcent now has what it takes to get the cash registers ringing. Lets find out…

Hyundai Xcent Look

This time around, Hyundai has tried to apply maximum effort to implement the design scheme from the high-end models in its portfolio such as Elantra. This has resulted in new ‘cascading styled’ grille that looks similar to the elder sibling. This also makes the Xcent looks different from the Grand i10 for which it has been taunted for many years. But for many, the older set-up with slender grille joining the headlamps would have been more appropriate. Another noticeable change at the front is the revamped headlamps and the revised bumper which now houses daytime running LEDs, positioned above the fog lamps.

There aren’t many changes at the side profile except the wheels are larger than before and a new set of 15-inch diamond cut alloy wheels. However, it’s the rear that has gone through a huge makeover. The smaller tail-lights of the previous model have now been replaced by wrap-around units, adding nice width to the car. The taillights setup look like a typical Audi. Then there is matte-black strip running across the rear bumper that further adds to the muscularity. Other changes include shark fin antenna at the top and the 1.2D badging on the front right fender. Overall, the changes done by the carmaker at the outside will compel you to make a nod of appreciation.

Hyundai Xcent Comfort

Not much has changed on the inside of the 2017 Hyundai Xcent. The dash, the vents, the various buttons, and even the stowage spaces remain unchanged. It retains its large cooled glovebox too. The new Xcent uses the same large multifunctional steering as well with the only addition being a voice activation button. It is still only adjustable for rake, by the way. The seat fabric design is new, but otherwise in terms of cushioning, support and seating comfort, it is identical to the older car. What’s significantly new though, is the infotainment system. Like on the Grand i10, the new system gets a wider touchscreen and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The latter mirrors a few functions of your phone on the screen simplifying access to related apps on the move. The new system besides offering Bluetooth connectivity and various audio input options, also doubles up as a reversing camera screen. Earlier, the Xcent used an inside rear-view mirror integrated screen which was too small to offer a clear view.

The Ciaz facelift has been in the works for a long time now and after a multitude of spy-shots and brochure leaks we finally got the opportunity to drive it. The Ciaz has been one of the strongest sellers in the C-segment and this despite the Ciaz being the only car to have not been updated. The City and the Verna have jumped a whole generation, the Skoda Rapid and the VW Vento have received their facelift too and the Toyota Yaris, well its just debuted in the Indian market scene. When talking about the exteriors, one valid question will pop in the mind ‘is the new one looks different from the older one’? And honestly, the answer to this query will totally depend on the type of variant you are looking at. For example, the top of the line Alpha variant can be easily differentiated from the retired model while the other variant will again need ‘eagle’s eye vision’. The new Ciaz comes with all-LED projector headlamps along with LED fog lamps and the tail lamps.

And let not forget the new chic design for the solid 16-inch alloy wheels and the chrome decoration on the rear bumper. Now if you move down to the variant line-up, there are limited aesthetic changes in the form of redesigned grille and bumper at the front. The new grille is different from the horizontal slats of the outgoing model. It now comes with sleeker grille featuring multi-segmented dashes or say, mesh-like detailing with the signature logo taking the center stage. The grille is not only pretty but also wider and connects to the headlamps. The chrome underlining further accentuates the aura at the front.

The bumper adds a little aggression with wider air dam and protruding c-shaped outline for the foglamps. Maruti hasn’t played around with the side profile and the rear much. A revamped rear would have taken this to a whole new level. However, if you really want to give a dash of sportiness, you can choose body kit and spoiler from the list of accessories. Overall, Ciaz looks much better from the earlier version, especially when you stare at it from the front.\

While there are no changes to the layout of the dashboard, the door pads or the seats, it’s the little updates to the trim that catch your attention. First up there’s the new dull wood grain accents plastered across the dashboard and the door pads, which actually do look good – they go well with the coherent ambience of this cabin. However, we aren’t fans of the satin chrome highlights (on the centre console and door trim) as they look too plasticky. Speaking of which, there are hard plastics throughout the cabin (including door armrests) though to be fair they do not feel cheap. It would be nice, however, to have soft-touch materials on the top half of dash and elbow touch points on the doors.

What will immediately catch your attention as you start driving is the new 4.2-inch multi information display between the dials. Similar to what you get in the Baleno, the display incudes a host of driving-related read outs. What’s new in here though is the light bar at the top which changes colour depending on how easy or hard you are with the throttle. That brings us to a new safety precaution that’s bound to raise eyebrows among many potential buyers – the 2018 Ciaz gets high speed warning alert which comes in at certain speeds. In fact, it will let out one beep each at 80kmph and 100kmph, however, once you cross 120kmph the car will constantly beep at you. Other safety features include driver and passenger seatbelt alert, ISOFIX mounts for child seat, dual airbags, ABS and EBD. You even get ESP and hill hold function for the automatic version.

In tech terms, the Ciaz retains Maruti’s popular SmartPlay infotainment system that gets both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. As always, the system is faultless when it comes to smart phone mirroring and the display itself is clear and well positioned. The sound quality from the audio system though is just about average. It’s easy to find the ideal driving position despite the lack of reach adjustment for the steering. The seats are big and supportive with excellent lateral support. The visibility, too, is good though not as generous as the Honda City. Moving to the second row, the Ciaz has always been impressive when we talk rear seat space and comfort – although the 2018 update doesn’t bring about any improvements, it is easy to appreciate the ample amount of legroom and headroom. If you are looking to be chauffeured around, the legroom with the front passenger seat pushed forward is simply astonishing. That said, we would have like the rear seat base to be longer because the under thigh support is slightly lacking in here.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Gearbox

The biggest change in the new 2018 Ciaz is the inclusion of the new K15 petrol engine (the diesel DDiS 200 remains unchanged). At 1.5 litres, it’s got more displacement (up by 100cc), more power (up by almost 10bhp) and more torque (up by 8Nm). So adding it up, the new motor puts out 103.2bhp and 138Nm. The K15 is an all-new motor and now comes as a mild hybrid across all variants. However the definition of mild hybrid has changed.

The Smart Hybrid technology now gets a Lithium-ion and a Lead battery set-up. As a result the system is enabled with an idle start stop which isnt a big deal but the next two features are. The Hybrid system importantly gets a Torque Assist Function wherein the energy stored in the Lithium-ion battery assists the petrol motor during acceleration and this can be seen in a graphical way on the new TFT screen. Since the Lithium-ion battery is utilized for better performance, it needs to be charged as well. And that is where the Brake Energy Regeneration comes into play. Stepping on the brakes or coasting keeps charging the battery. The cycle continues thereby aiding performance and fuel efficiency.

But does it work Well for starters, the bigger engine does have better performance on tap. For the automatic variant Maruti have retained the four-speed torque converter gearbox which frankly falls behind compared to the more modern gearboxes on offer. However for the short distance we drove it, it feels just about adequate in city confines but with just four speeds on offer, it does tend to sap power and falls behind when you really ask for performance. The CVT from the Baleno would have made for a better choice, but would have escalated costs so as a result Maruti has stuck with the old gearbox. But in its favour, the gearbox is extremely smooth and still works better than any AMT around.

The five-speed manual offers a better window to the K15 motors increased performance. While we did not notice a big jump in outright performance, drivability has definitely improved. However, do not expect this to be a performance oriented motor. Above 3000rpm, the engine starts getting thrummy and if you rev it further, the engine starts taking a coarse note. What also did not help are the speed warning beeps at 80 and 100kmph which got buzzing like an alarm clock post 120kmph. While we are sure these can be turned off from the settings, what was clear from the beeps and the engine note is that the Ciaz does not like to be pushed. At relaxed speeds, the engine turns lazily at just over 2500rpm with 100kmph on the speedo and that is where the Ciaz feels in its element.

The ride and handling of this sedan is absolutely predictable. And unlike the predecessor SX4 which had a stiff suspension, Ciaz comes with soft suspension which offers absorbent ride quality at lower speeds. The car feels nice and composed on smooth roads and feels planted on high speeds, enough to instil confidence in the driver. Having said that, at high speeds especially above triple digit speeds, the rear passengers would feel vertical bobbling when the vehicle goes over an undulation on the surface. At lower speeds too, the ride is comfortable and the ground clearance is also not a problem either as the car is capable of handling the non-existent road quite well. However, you would feel vertical movement when going over some bad craters. This is due to soft damping, so the ideal way is to make the most out of joyful ride, drive it on the highways.In terms of handling, the car has been crafted to make the driving more relaxing, not engaging. And the sheer example is that the steering weight has been tuned to be feather-light in cities while solid on highways. Throw it at the corners and the steering is practically quick but don’t expect loads of feedback.

Braking is balanced and there is short pedal travel before the brakes bite. Hard braking will make the car feel stable and maintain composure at the same time. And it seems ABS comes into action unexpectedly earlier which is a good thing. As far as safety kit is concerned, the standard list of features include dual airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat anchorage and pedestrian protection compliance and seat belt pretensioners with force limiters. Other advanced feature include ESP with hill hold assist, automatic headlamps, reverse parking camera, rear defogger, driver and passenger seat belt reminder and speed alert system.
