The Maruti Suzuki Baleno may have been around since October 2015, but there is no slowing down this premium hatchback. An absolute bestseller for Maruti, the Baleno has averaged sales of 17,000 units in the past six months alone. So I have to say there was clearly no pressing need to rush in a facelift – especially given Maruti’s usual lifecycles on ‘premium products’ (look at the Ciaz), and the fact that any new competition like the Kia Rio and Tata X451 for instance, are still far away.

The Baleno outsells the current rivals like the Hyundai i20 (average sales of 12,000 units/month), VW Polo (average sales of around 1400 units a month), and Honda Jazz (average sales of 1200 units/month) by many a mile. It was at the very end of the first month of this New Year, that Maruti Suzuki unleashed the facelifted Baleno on us. Yes it was through an innocuous press release, no big drives or launch events. But now that you get the context, you will understand why it was important to bring you this review – because we still think it is a very big deal.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno Design

The Baleno design isn’t the loud design language you’d see on the Hyundai i20 Elite or the Honda Jazz. In many ways, it looks like an evolution of the Swift. But that in no way is meant to be read in a negative light. The design is subtle, yet strong enough to lend it a lot of road presence. The flowing lines and smooth corners across the vehicle are derived from Suzuki’s new ‘liquid flow’ concept.

The Baleno has got a new grille, which is striking, unlike any other you’d see in the company’s portfolio. There’s a chrome outline that runs from the grille upwards and integrates neatly into the headlamp. The headlamp unit of the top variant we drove houses projector lamps clubbed with LED daytime running lights, and the ‘follow-me-home’ feature. On the lower variants though, it is a much simpler unit.

The side profile of the Baleno is where you see most evidence of the liquid flow concept. The lines on the side flow in sync with the overall design, and the bulges around the Baleno waist add to the character of the car. The windows and handles get the chrome treatment, and they sit well with the overall look of the car. At the rear, the smaller window and high boot-lid raise the overall presence of the car. The wider stance, further accentuated by the pronounced chrome element, gives the Baleno a distinct identity. The LED tail lamps look proportionate with the overall styling of the rear.

The top-end Baleno we drove had 16-inch alloys, while the lower variants get basic 15-incg steel wheels. Customers would have the option of choosing from seven colours, including a Autumn Orange, Ray Blue, Pearl Arctic White, Granite Gray, Fire Red, Premium Urban Blue and Metallic Premium Silver.

The interior of the Baleno is one area we were fairly impressed with, and that is not simply restricted to the way the dashboard or the instrument cluster looks. The all-black look that Maruti has opted for gives the cabin a premium and sporty feel, attributes we believe would be welcomed by potential customers. Some components, including the 4.2-inch TFT screen, have been borrowed from the S-Cross, for instance. The metre console is freshly designed, and small elements therein have been beautifully done. For the first time in the country, Maruti has introduced the Apple CarPlay system, which allows the driver to connect an iPhone through the car’s in-built display and voice control system.

Steering mounted audio controls, tilt & telescopic steering, reverse parking camera and voice recognition are some of the other features that make the Baleno interiors an exciting experience. The higher models also get climate control, rear parking camera and satellite navigation system. The cabin overall is spacious. There is ample leg, knee and shoulder room for the rear passengers and the front seats are large and comfortable. The driver’s seat gets the height-adjustable function. The boot offers 339 l of space, which we think is ideal for a family’s weekend run. You would find the loading height in the boot taller than some of the other cars in the segment, but that has been primarily done to keep in sync with European regulations. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno is powered by two engine options – a 1,197 cc petrol and a 1,248 cc diesel. The petrol engine generates 83 hp power at 6,000 rpm and 115 Nm torque at 4,000 rpm whereas, the diesel produces 74hp at 4,000 rpm and 190 Nm at 2,000 rpm. While the petrol engine is a smooth unit, the diesel is more fun to drive but can be loud as well.

The Maruti Suzuki Baleno petrol has two gearbox options, a 5-speed manual and a CVT automatic. The diesel, although, comes only with a 5-speed manual transmission. On our way to school, my friend Rahul and I used to play a very interesting game. We would count similar cars of a certain segment and whosoever had the larger count would win. That was ages ago but I still find myself counting cars at times. And if I had to pick a car today from the D-segment, which would help me beat Rahul, Skoda Superb would be it.The car may be the Czech carmaker’s most premium offering but is still a very popular choice in India and a common sighting in any of India’s big cities. After a successful run with the second generation Superb, Skoda has introduced the all-new Superb in India. Does it better everyone’s expectation? We drove from Mangalore to Coorg to find out.

The Superb is known for its presence and the new generation car has loads of it. Gone are the limousine-like proportions. It’s still a large car but the added width adds a lot of character. The sharp looks have evolved from the VisionC concept and a lot of the concept’s details have been carried forward to the Skoda Superb.

Skoda Superb Design

The face gets Skoda’s family grille while the rest of the design only makes the front end look a lot more aggressive than before. The headlamps follow the edgy theme seen in the Octavia but they are sharper and there’s a lot of detailing inside them – like the illuminated eyelash-like pattern and the striking L-shaped DRLs. The car is longer than its predecessor while the wheelbase has also increased. However, the more coupe-like roofline, as opposed to a traditional three box-layout, makes the Superb stand out especially when compared to other D-segment cars. The shoulder line runs from the headlamp all the way to the tail lamp and to go with the aggressive styling theme, it’s a lot deeper and prominent at the doors. The Skoda Superb is offered with two alloy wheel designs depending on the variant. Although the Style and L&K variants get 17-inch wheels, the latter gets the more stylish multi-spoke pattern.

The rear end gets large split lamps that feature a neat looking C-shaped pattern. The tail lamps extend onto the bootlid and the angular shape follows the Skoda design signature seen in all of its siblings. All Superb variants also get an electric panorama sunroof as standard. Gone is the rotary knob to control it, and in its place is a push/pull switch, which is easier to use.

Skoda Superb Cabin

Were we to show you a photo each of the Superb and Octavia’s dashboards, there’s a high chance you wouldn’t be able to tell which belongs to which. Sure, the Superb’s dash is well laid-out, functional and user-friendly but it also seems designed to a template and this, to us, is a bit of a disappointment. With that out of the way, let’s get to what’s good about the cabin.For one, quality is top-notch. There’s less chrome detailing than the last Superb and glossy black plastics have taken the place of the faux wood too. But in terms of look and feel, the Superb’s cabin is comparable to cars higher up the price ladder. Soft-touch plastics, felt- lined door pockets and robust-feeling switches, the Superb has it all. The L&K trim’s customisable ambient lighting only makes the cabin feel more special still.

It’s also a cabin you’ll be comfortable in for long. Incredibly, there’s even more space in the back than before so you can really stretch out. Should you need more kneeroom, the Superb gives you the option to slide the front passenger seat at the touch of a button from the rear. Skoda aptly calls this feature ‘Boss Button’.The rear seat is sumptuous, well- cushioned and offers good all-round support. However, some might find the backrest a touch upright. The middle seat is also not very useable thanks to its hard cushioning and the high centre tunnel. Skoda should have also provided a dedicated air-con blower control at the rear as the AC takes time to cool that section of the cabin. In fact, in peak summer heat, we found the Superb’s AC struggling to lower cabin temperature quickly.

L&K trim cars get cooled front seats and the feature is a boon in hot and humid India. The powered front seats are broad, well- bolstered and offer a great range of adjustability. Finding a comfortable driving position is also easy but we wish the steering had electric adjust too.Otherwise, the Superb comes rather well-loaded. Bi-xenon headlamps, a sunroof, leather seats, touchscreen infotainment system with voice commands, sunroof and roll-up sun visors for the rear windows and rear windscreen are all part of standard equipment. Top-spec L&K versions also get three-zone climate control and a sonorous 610W Canton system, with 12 speakers, that strikes all the right chords.The Superb also scores for practicality with plenty of cubby holes and spaces for bottles, loose items and documents.

Skoda Superb Performance

As before, the new Superb is available with petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol engine is the VW Group’s 180hp, 1.8-litre direct-injection, turbocharged unit that also powers the Skoda Octavia and Audi A3 in India. This motor is tuned to make 320Nm of torque when mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, and 250Nm with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic which is the other transmission on offer. In either form, the petrol Superb is an exciting car.The 1.8 TSI motor is quick to rev, offers solid mid-range punch and does everything while making the right noises. It’s easy to get wheelspin on a hard launch and even when you floor the throttle in a lower gear, you’ll see the traction control lights flash wildly. The 1.8 TSI’s manual gearbox is a joy to use with a very precise shift action, but clutch travel is long. Power and torque are available in plenty through the gears and overtaking requires just a flex of the right foot. We did find the gearing quite tall though. Third gear stretches to 175kph at 6,800rpm and fourth goes well beyond 220kph. Flat-out performance is good with the petrol manual version posting a 0-100kph time of 8.42 seconds.The petrol automatic does well for itself too with a time of 8.52 seconds from a standstill to the ton. Boost comes in a bit later here, at about 2,500rpm, but you’ll only feel the surge when you are aggressive with the throttle. In average driving, the automatic gearbox keeps the engine in the lower reaches of the rev band to maximise efficiency and progress is always smooth. Gearshifts are quick, be it in automatic mode or manual, via the gearshift or steering-mounted paddles. In manual mode, the engine runs deeper in the powerband, revving to 6,600rpm, and downshifting is quick with the paddles.

The 2.0-litre diesel engine version that comes mated to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission is exciting in its own right. The power figures should give a hint as to why. Where the last-gen Superb’s 2.0 diesel made 140hp and 320Nm, this one’s newer unit makes 177hp and 350Nm. And the performance jump is quite evident.0-100kph takes 7.83 seconds compared to the old car’s 11.22 seconds and it’s quicker in kickdown acceleration too. Yes, there is a bit of lag initially but the diesel engine comes in its stride past 2,000rpm and revs quite readily to 4,900rpm. The gearbox works well, shifts are quick and you have the option to take manual control here too. The engine is quite refined as diesels go but there is a bit of clatter at idle and though not loud, it’s always audible.L&K versions of the petrol automatic and diesel also come with drive modes that alter engine, gearbox and steering settings. You can choose between Eco, Normal and Sport settings and even customise the experience with Individual.

Skoda Superb Riding

The Superb has always focused on ride over handling but the new model does both quite well. Being based on the MQB platform, the chassis is more rigid and light at the same time. This, along with a multi-link rear suspension, adds to the dynamics. For a car with a large footprint, the Superb diesel is quite lightweight (1,565kg). The steering weight can be adjusted but it is still quite light to operate even when it is weighted up. It isn’t a downer and in fact comes handy driving through town and over long distances. It is precise, although it could have been slightly more involving. The Skoda Superb overall offers neutral handling and surprisingly doesn’t feel like a large car to drive. Ride quality is impressive too with the suspension tuned for India and set more on the softer side. Body roll is controlled while high-speed stability is quite good. The tyres make a difference and we are glad that the Hankooks are softer and stickier compared to the Goodyears offered in the previous Superb and new Octavia.

This car can’t be a Superb without a long list of features and the new generation car offers all the bells and whistles you could as for. While we spoken about a few comfort and safety features earlier, there are a lot more on offer. So many that the brochure uses three pages to list out all the features.

The more affordable Style variant gets a lot of features too. Offered as standard are leather seats, adaptive bi-xenon headlamps, hill-hold control, multi collision brake (a system that automatically shuts off the engine after it detects an accident when the airbag is deployed), an electro-mechanical handbrake, 8 airbags, parktronic sensors, keyless entry and ignition, puddle lights, 12-way adjustable driver seat, 6.5-inch touch screen, dual-zone climate control and two Skoda umbrellas that sit inside the front doors.

By any objective measure, the latest Skoda Superb is a fantastic car. It blends comfort, luxury and performance in one package and does so convincingly well. As always, keen pricing makes the deal seem sweeter still. But it must be said, the new Superb doesn’t take quite as big a leap over its predecessor as we had hoped. It builds on the strengths of the last-gen car rather than take things to the next level.

Some might even argue the new Superb’s not as multi-dimensional as the earlier car, having lost a bit of its sportiness and flair. However, would these aspects matter to a typical buyer? Not really. Because the way to really see the Superb is as a luxury car that punches above its weight. The car is as good, if not better than many of the more expensive cars that wear a premium badge. It’s this image that has helped sell the Superb in the past and there’s no reason why things will be any different with this new-gen car.
