Tata Indica Overview

The origin of Indica brand dates back to 1998, when it was first launched in India. After several facelifts and mechanical upgrades, Indica still stands tall amid competition in the small car space. With the petrol version being defunct, Indica is currently available with two diesel engines mated to the conventional five-speed manual gearbox.

Powered by the 1.4 litre CR4 diesel engine, Indica is claimed to return 25km/l of fuel economy. Built on the XO platform, Indica shares underpinnings with some of the Tata cars including the new Tiago. In terms of looks, Indica is a bit too basic compared to new models in this space. Inside, there is comfortable space in front and rear, although it does lag behind on feature front.

Tata Indica Look

Dimensionally, Tata India eV2 measures 3.69m in length, 1.67m in width and is 1.48 m high. The exterior is simple and elegant. In two of the four variants available, the bumper is body-coloured and this lends the exterior a very smart apperance. The frontage is stylish with a smart chrome grille and radiant headlamps. The rear end has an impressive tail lamp cluster. Door rub rails, ORVMs, half-wheel covers and the chrome-plated hood make the hatchback look very enticing. The Outer Rear-View Mirrors (ORVMs) are adjustable and the control is Indica eV2 comes with 14” steel wheels and 165/65 R14-sized puncture-resistant radial tyres.

Tata Indica Comfort

The interior of Tata Indica eV2 is tastefully done and definitely impresses even in a cursory glance. Unlike other hatchbacks, it is loaded with some incredible features. The rack and pinion type steering wheel has four spokes and the instrument panel is very chic. Adding to passenger convenience are features like reading lamps, a cabin lamp that is operatable from all four doors, a lamp in the boot, a utility tray with a coin holder and a parcel shelf. The horn pad for the steering wheel, moulded roof lining, internal antenna and the door trims are other likeable features of this hatch. Tata Indica eV2 can accommodate five passengers and the comfortable seating is lined with soft fabric. The Air Conditioning unit is very effective and makes the ride very comfortable. The electronic instrument cluster has a digital odometer, 2 trip meters with light intensity control, a tachometer and a digital clock. The painted floor Console comes with the provision for Mobile Charger / Cigarette Lighter. The boot space of 220 L is adequate and adds to the convenience value of this car.

Tata Indica Gearbox

The Indica is only offered in two diesel models, (petrol has been discontinued) the CR4 and V2 with the latter being a BS3 model. We drove the BS4 CR4 model. The car uses a similar block as before but with a 16 valve DOHC and common-rail system. Power is similar as before (70PS@4000rpm) while torque has increased from 135Nm to 140Nm produced between 1800-3000rpm. Turbo lag has reduced slightly and makes it easier to drive around town. A new F-shift 5-speed gearbox offers easier shifts but isn’t precise. The clutch has also been updated and is now lighter. Apply car loan for Tata Indica.

The suspension gets a few tweaks and this helps improve ride quality. Over bumpy and undulated surfaces, the ride was impressive, overall suspension noise has also reduced. Ride quality is the car’s biggest USP. The steering feel is same and is a bit vague at higher speeds. The brakes though haven’t improved and feel spongy with a long travel. Plus there is no ABS even as an option.

Tata Indica Rideing

The suspension system of Tata Indica eV2 is an independent, wishbone, MacPherson Strut type for the front axle. The rear axle has an independent, semi?trailling arm type suspension with coil spring. The car comes equipped with hydraulic shock absorbers. The small turning radius of 4.9 m makes Indica eV2 extremely maneuverable. The steering wheel seems amorphous at times and there is some body roll experienced.

Safety features such as keyless entry with central locking, child safety lock on rear doors, high mounted stop lamp, collapsing steering; 3 point ELR seatbelts for front seat passengers and engine immobilizer are equipped in the hatchback. Elements like rear chrome garnish, side blinkers on ORVMs, clear lens headlamps, chrome finished grille, body coloured door handles style the exterior. Tata Indica eV2 is a smart city car with a stupendous fuel?efficiency. Priced between 3.99 L and 4.88 L, it has set the hatchback segment abuzz. It is very conveniently designed and the feature line?up is ideal for a small car that keeps you moving in the city. Tata Motors is a very renowned automobile manufacturer and enjoys a grand reputation in India. The well?spread Tata dealership nexus is a high point and the after?sales service is incredible too. This little hatchback is like an old wine in a new bottle. Not much has been changed about the looks though some touch of style is seen in the new bumper, the revamped headlights and in the chrome strip on Indica’s derri?re. The side profile is inherited from its predecessors. The interior elements lack finesse and quality and Tata should look into the same. For the tasteful lot, it can be quite a turn?off. The petrol version of Indica has been discontinued and in its present form, Indica eV2 comes with a 1.4 l, 16?valved, Common Rail Direct Injection type Diesel engine with a capacity of 1396 cc. The torque yield has increased and turbo lag is greatly reduced. This coupled with a very small turning radius of 4.9 m, makes it a very convenient city car. The clutch is more refined but the gear shifts could have been much better. The ride quality is superior and that is attributed to its refurnished suspension system. The brakes, however, feel spongy and the near absence of safety features pinches hard.
