Maruti Ignis India is a new super compact SUV that will be of the size of the i10. The Ignis is based on Suzuki’s fifth-generation platform that is lighter and even more rigid, which means it is a lot more safer. Maruti Suzuki has followed in the footsteps of some of the luxury carmakers to simplify the dashboard layout by offering a standout 7-inch entertainment screen. It does look modern but could have been more driver-centric in placement.

In the lower variants, a 2-DIN music system replaces the touchscreen, which doesn’t look awkward save for the orange backlighting that doesn’t go one bit with the classy white backlit instrument cluster. There’s a marked improvement in the quality of the aircraft style air-con knobs and steering controls over other Maruti Suzuki models.Another welcome change in the Ignis’ cabin is the new steering wheel, which is good to hold thanks to a non-plasticky rubbery finish. The audio controls on the steering wheel are also well-damped and easy to get used to.

The Ignis is high on style and the doors get metal-finished door handles that are chunky and funky. The doors appear heavier compared to other Maruti Suzuki hatchbacks of the Ignis’ size but don’t expect them to shut with ‘the thud’ that we love to hear on the Germans.The front seats are well contoured, offer decent under-thigh support, and hug you comfortably. View out is clear and the dashboard isn’t too sweeping as well, unlike most modern hatchbacks; so those with a shorter frame would get a decent view up-front, even on the variants that don’t offer driver seat height adjustment.

The Ignis’ cabin is best suited for four people, although you can squeeze in a fifth passenger in the rear seat as well. The cabin scores high on practicality aspects with good legroom and headroom for all passengers and cubbyholes to store water bottles on all doors. The rear seat gets two detachable headrests and is 60:40 split, which ensures maximum utilization of cabin space for various needs. Maruti Suzuki hasn’t officially revealed the specifications of the new Ignis, however it is likely to come with a 1.2-litre petrol and 1.2-litre diesel engine options. The 1.2-litre petrol is the K-Series engine and this will come with a five-speed manual transmission and produce about 83bhp of power and 115Nm of peak torque. The other engine is an all new three cylinder diesel engine that will churn about 75bhp and about 180Nm of torque. This engine has been developed by Suzuki and the two cylinder version of this engine is used on the Celerio and four pot will be coming on other Maruti Suzuki products. This will also come with a five-speed manual transmission. There will even an automatic transmission on offer. The Ignis will be sold through the Nexa Experience dealerships and hence it won’t come with an AMT. The Ignis will be coming with an automatic transmission on the petrol engine and maybe even the diesel engine. The Ignis for the Indian car market will be offered with front wheel drive. For exports, however it will even come with an all-wheel drive as well. For India, at the moment there is no requirement for it.

We took the petrol manual out first and, wow, what a great start to a drive. The unit is peppy and eager and the gearshifts are nice and quick with a positive feel to them. The clutch, however, is not very progressive and getting smooth starts needed a bit of concentrated pedal work. Power is available right from low revs and past 2,500rpm, the unit has a nice stronger surge. Rev the engine hard and it gets loud, but it’s a nice and sporty tone and the eager-footed will see themselves doing this quite often. Sadly, the only fly in the ointment is the steering. It’s too light with no real connected feel and, typical of many Marutis, it doesn’t centre after a turn.

The ride is another highlight of the Ignis. It moves like a car that’s a lot heavier with a nice sure-footedness and does not get tossed around a lot on bumps and potholes. We switch to the diesel and it does feel a bit stiffer, but this is only in comparison. On the whole, all the Ignis models offer a well- composed ride. The diesel manual has a slightly heavier clutch but also a heavier steering – a welcome addition as it brings in a bit of feel. The engine is nice and drivable and does not suffer from very noticeable turbo lag. Power comes in above 2,000rpm until about 4,000rpm, after which the delivery begins to taper. The sound levels, however, do increase and this engine isn’t as refined as a few others at this price point.

Switch to a diesel AMT and the drivability sees a dip. The shift speeds aren’t a problem during light throttle inputs when you are pottering around town in slow-moving traffic. It’s when you want to get a quick move on, like in start-stop traffic or overtaking on highways that the pause between shifts becomes apparent. You will have to work around this using the manual selector, and what’s nice is that in manual mode the car lets you rev until the redline. Things improve on the petrol AMT with the shifts becoming less perceptible. However, in comparison to the diesel AMT, the manual ‘box is the far more enjoyable drive experience. Unless, our crazy city traffic kills it for you, in which case you’ll have to settle for the AMT and reach for that tip lever from time to time.

This isn’t your typical Maruti. It isn’t value for money in the true Maruti sense, its styling steers away from the safe path, and it will polarise people into ‘love-it’ or ‘hate-it’ camps. The AMT gearbox isn’t all good and at this price point, it would be fair to expect a smoother shifting unit. Also, the steering is quite lifeless, particularly the petrol, but that apart, the car has a lot going for it. It’s cool and funky, it’s loaded with equipment not seen in this segment like LED projector lamps, a touchscreen system and auto climate control. There’s also a lot of space inside. Both engines are rewarding to drive, especially the peppy petrol and did we mention it’s really funky? So, in a positive manner of speaking, this is not your typical Maruti. And then again, it is one! Many components are shared with its stablemates, so maintenance costs will be minimal, and it’s backed by the carmaker’s wide service network. The Ignis then is a Maruti that isn’t. Who knew with Maruti you can have your cake and eat it too!

Renault Captur Look

The Captur is a bona fide result of the evolving crossover design trend in recent years. The segment has become increasingly competitive and accordingly, the Captur has been imbued with a quirky sense of style. It looks eccentric and very French, thanks to certain design elements like the gaping grille (with the large Renault logo) that meets the edges of the headlights, the C-shaped daytime running lights and the large front bumper. The all LED headlights are superbly intricate as are the 17-inch alloy wheels with their textured inlays.

These design highlights matched to a long and wide profile with a high stance ensure that the Captur looks modern and edgy enough to gain stares in a segment that’s becoming more stylish each time a new product is released. The leather seats not only look neat but also offer good cushioning and back support. However, under thigh support is lacking for tall passengers in both rows. The rear seat too has just about average headroom and kneeroom for tall passengers. This may come to you as a surprise since the Duster has tons of space but the truth is that the Captur has a smaller-sized cabin. Seating position is high too, which gives a commanding view of the road on the upside but this also eats away the headroom.

The upward sloping shoulder on the window line makes the rear glass smaller and this gives out a feeling of reduced spaciousness in the cabin. Renault has added some leather inserts on the door panel, which is a good thing but overall plastic quality could have been better since Renault is calling it a premium SUV. There are good number of features in the cabin. To start with, Renault is offering automatic headlamps and rain sensing wipers. You get LED cabin lights, ambient lighting, new digital speedometer ISOFIX child seat mounts and a cooled glove box which has the depth to keep long items.

The Duster-inspired 7-inch touchscreen audio system houses the display of the reversing camera. The software has now been optimised to boot faster but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are surprisingly missing. Other standard features include keyless entry, push button start and automatic climate control with rear AC vents. The ARKAMYS-tuned sound system churns out some good quality sound. On the road, the Captur could be best described as ‘comfortable’. More on that later… Now we ought to make it clear that the India-spec Captur is quite different from the one sold in the Europe. The Captur that we will be getting is based on Renault’s MO platform for emerging markets, which is why the brand has stuck with the tried and tested 1.5-litre K9K diesel motor. That being said, there is a vast difference in the way the Captur and the Duster behave on the road.

The Captur and the Duster share the same 1.5-litre 110bhp/240Nm diesel motor, however, the refinement levels are world apart. The Captur is significantly quieter on the move thanks to better insulation and a less noisy motor – one can hardly hear the diesel clatter once the windows are up. What’s more, the Captur also accelerates in a more linear manner than the Duster when the motor is on boost. For those who are wondering, there is still some turbo lag under 2,000rpm, post which the Captur pulls strongly till 4,500rpm or thereabout. The motor’s got enough torque lower down the rev range to propel the Captur through traffic without ever feeling like it needs to be worked too hard. To our surprise, even the clutch feel is different compared to the Duster – it’s more precise and not as heavy either.

The Captur is dynamically very sound and it was bound to be since it shares it underpinnings with the Duster. Handling characteristics are very similar to the Duster. The steering offers good feedback, sometimes more than you would like. It still has the mid-turn kickback but can be irritating at times. Nevertheless, this is the best steering in the segment as far as enthusiastic driving is concerned. The Captur is not unnerved in changing direction and while doing so there isn’t much body roll.

The Captur offers a very settled ride. It is barely moved by rough and bad roads. At slow speeds, almost every undulation is filtered before it reaches the cabin. At high speeds, the rear passengers did feel a few jolts over very rough roads but overall, the passengers would find no reason to complain as far as ride is concerned. Braking performance is progressive with the pedal offering good bite.

The Renault Captur will get dual front airbags along with ABS and EBD. The SUV also gets Brake Assist. Renault’s sales and service network in India is limited in reach and the company still has a long way to go when compared to some of its immediate rivals. Put simply, the Captur is an interesting car. At first, it looks like a generic crossover but as you get closer its European design elements stand out and you realise that there is nothing quite like it in this segment – both the Creta and the Compass carry traditional crossover design cues.

The real question here, though, is whether the Captur advances the crossover game forward for Renault. It’s certainly improved over the Duster in many key areas including engine refinement, gearshift quality, cabin ergonomics and ride quality. However, it trails behind its rivals when it comes to interior quality and drivetrain options. Renault, then, have got to play their pricing card right to regain some momentum in the crossover segment. Similar styling to the diesel version means the same curvy dashboard with silver outlines that accentuate the flowing design. There’s a feel-good factor linked to the dual coloured leather seats, chunky multi-functional steering and soft touch door pads, but it is not consistent through the cabin and the quality levels is not exactly what you’d expect from a Rs 20 lakh car. That said there’s quite a bit of space to stash one’s belongings on the centre console, two gloveboxes and the door pads.

We noticed that the visibility while backing up is a bit hampered due to the angular window line at the quarter glass section. That said, reading the temperature off the raked air-con display is difficult with the reflections in broad daylight. Once seated in the front, occupants will find a decently contoured seat that’s well bolstered for comfort and lend good back and thigh support, along with lots of knee and head room.

Move on to the middle row, and buyers will rejoice over the large seats that impart proper support with liberal shoulder room, head room and adjustable kneeroom since there’s a lever to move the front seats back and forth. Adults can be seated in the last row albeit with limited kneeroom, so comfort over longer stints is questionable with the low seat squab and high floor. The petrol Innova Crysta will be available in seven and eight seater options with variants called GX, VX and ZX. Just like the diesel sibling, one will get three airbags (includes driver knee airbag), ABS and brake assist as standard. The ZX variant features an integrated touch screen infotainment system with navigation, Bluetooth, USB and aux-in. Toyota has replaced the KD series of diesel engines with the GD series. The new oil burners are vastly improved in every regard, featuring richer hardware and crucially a big jump in power and torque outputs. Both the 2.4-litre and 2.8-litre engines are similar in hardware and also get Eco and Power modes – which naturally alter performance (the default mode is in between both). So in Eco mode, you can feel the motors don’t rev so quickly while in Power mode, the added punch is very apparent, the Innova being very quick to pick up speed.

The 2.4-litre oil burner comes matched to a 5-speed manual gearbox which offers smooth shifts, the clutch too is light. But the gear lever vibrates a lot on start-up, just like in the first gen model. The 2.8-litre diesel is only offered with a 6-speed automatic gearbox and while shifts aren’t the quickest, they are smooth. One can also shift gears manually by using the tiptronic function on the gear lever. Both the engines have a bit of lag lower down which is quite well masked and power delivery is very linear, the mid-range being the strong suit of the GD mills.

In the 2.4-litre manual, 100 km/hr in top gear results in 2200 RPM on the tachometer while the ton comes up in third gear. The new Innova does feel more relaxed while cruising unlike the old model where you would miss a sixth gear. Both the engines redline at 4500 RPM and the big improvement in the Innova Crysta is the refinement, there are very little vibrations inside the cabin. However, push the motor hard and the engine makes quite the sound, still better than the old Innova but could have been better. Fuel efficiency isn’t great with ARAI claimed mileage being 15.10 km/l for the 2.4-litre model while the 2.8-litre automatic manages 14.29 km/l, a mild hybrid system would have done the trick. The increase in weight by a considerable 200 kgs is reason to blame for the average fuel economy.

Also, one will hear the suspension only when the roads turn from bad to worse which is when it filters into the cabin with a thud. Be prepared for some sideways rocking and a bit of bobbing on uneven patches as these are traits of a ladder frame chassis setup.With this suspension setup, the Innova Crysta invites loads of grip and great straight line stability. Though it tends to roll a fair bit, the steering does a good job in controlling its manners around bends. We did feel that the steering was a bit light and slow off the dead centre once you’re on the move, but as speeds rise it weighs up decently. That said, at much slower speeds like while navigating through tighter lanes or parking, you will witness the steering to become exceedingly heavy and cumbersome to manoeuvre. With the Innova Crysta, one will find the brakes to offer a reassuring sharp bite, however, a little more feedback from the pedal would have been welcome.

Toyota has upped the game in the safety department as well. The Japanese automaker is providing seven airbags with the new Innova including a driver-side knee airbag for the range topping ZX variant. Dual front airbags and ABS is standard across all the variants. There is Vehicle Stability Control and Hill-Start Assist Control on offer as well. Toyota is providing 3-point seatbelts with adjustable headrests for all the passengers including third row seats. The Toyota badge is known to offer hassle-free after sales in India with a wide reach and network spread across the country. Longevity is tried and tested while the resale value of Toyota cars is up there as well.
