Jeep Compass Facelift First Drive

Jeep Compass Overview

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles after a long delay finally made their India debut back in 2016 with two exciting products which included the Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee. Both these SUV’s were sold in the Indian market via the CBU route and thus were expensive and well above the reach of many. However, that is all going to change now because Jeep has decided to launch a new SUV which is well within reach of buyers.

Jeep has unveiled the Compass SUV in India today, and the good thing is that the compact SUV is made in India product which also means that the new product will also be priced quite aggressively as well. The brands new product will be locally assembled at their Ranjangaon facility in Maharashtra from June onward. The new Jeep Compass replaces the old Compass and Patriot SUV in the International market, and apart from the Indian market, the same SUV is also produced in some other Countries as well. However, the good news is that India will be mother hub for right-hand drive Compass SUV from where it will also be exported to some other right-hand drive markets as well. For all your information the Compass SUV is offered with 17 engine options for different markets of the world. View offers on Jeep Cars from Jeep dealers in Hyderabad at Autozhop.

Jeep Compass Look

Buyers of premium soft-roaders do tend to care about the way their ride looks which means the Compass ought to look good. It is, in fact, instantly recognizable as a Jeep with its traditional design cues like the seven-slot grille, squared wheel arches and lots of clearance. The Compass’ mimics some of the Cherokee’s design bits like the clamshell hood with a dual break line and centre bulge besides the sleek pair of headlights.

At the rear, the standout feature comes in the form of its LED taillights. Slim and rectangular in shape, the lamp design flows into the tailgate which heightens the sense of width. The other design highlight is the chrome strip that runs over the window line and flows around the car, differentiating the contrasting roof from the rest of the sheet metal. All in all, the seven-slot grille, that bulging bonnet and the high stance have some real presence, giving the Compass a charming veneer to an otherwise straightforward albeit a well-proportioned design.

Jeep Compass Comfort

Like the exterior, the Compass’ interior is not too extravagant but it isn’t dull either. The dashboard’s design may seem flat at first but if you look closer there’s plenty going on. The trapezoidal center stack, again, is something we have seen in Jeeps previously. In the Compass, it houses a 7-inch display for Jeep’s UConnect infotainment system and further down, there’s a sturdy metal gear knob, terrain control dial and an electronic parking brake. The cabin feels extra premium and also relatively airier with the all-white leather seats although having such a light shade requires constant attention and care – our test car was less than a couple of thousand km old and had a number of scuffs and dirt marks on the seats.

Build quality and fit and finish of the Compass is quite good but it isn’t without its shortcomings. Other than the tacky gloss black panel surrounding the 7-inch display, there are noticeable dummy buttons on the steering wheel and the indicator stalks feel like they have come from FCA’s cheaper products. Also, the graining on the dash may seem like the hard, scratchy kind but it’s actually made up of soft touch plastics. The latter, along with the supple leather upholstery, lend a quality feel to the cabin. What also raise the comfort quotient in here are the large front seats which offer plenty of under thigh support and good side bolstering. The rear seat, meanwhile, is tailor made for the Indian market – the cushioning is just right and thanks to the high stance, there’s a great deal of headroom, too. Despite the seat base being made longer for the India-spec car, we feel it could do with a little more under thigh support. Nevertheless, the Compass makes for a great buy for even those looking to be driven around.

Jeep Compass Gearbox

The good thing is that the Jeep Compass SUV is offered with both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol unit will be powered by 1.4 FIRE MultiAir petrol engines which are expected to produce around 160+ Hp of peak power and 250 Nm of torque.. The diesel unit, on the other hand, gets the 2.0-litre MultiJet unit which will provide 170 Hp+ of peak power and about 350 NM of torque. The following drivetrains will be paired either to a 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Both the petrol as well as the diesel drivetrain is offered with both 2X2 as well as 4X4 wheel drive options. The Jeep’s dedicated four-wheel-drive system and also select terrain technology will also be present even in their entry level product for the Indian market which means the Jeep has shared its offroading DNA with the Compass as well. Besides all these offroading hardware the Compass will also get a differential locking system as well on the top end variant. The lower trims, on the other hand, will be offered with a two-wheel drive option. For more info on Jeep Compass check icadl2013.org.in

Jeep Compass Rideing

Jeep has impressed us in this department by offering Frequency Selective Damping suspension. The Compass is dynamically rich both on and off-road, having such equipment such as Dynamic Steering Torque (DST), Selec-Terrain and Jeep Active Drive. The ride is fantastic that filters out the bumps and potholes very well. The suspension is well damped and it’s only on huge craters that you feel the thuds filtering inside the cabin. There is some amount of body roll when you push around the bends but the steering feel and feedback is quite impressive for an SUV of this size. The Compass handles corners cleanly maintaining its line very well, thanks to the grippy all weather tyres and the AWD system.

The AWD system comes with four modes Auto, Snow, Sand and Mud. The power is front wheel biased and when it feels the need, the rear wheels come to action. We had an off-road session with the Compass in Goa in slippery and muddy conditions including water fording and a couple of steep inclines and declines. The baby Jeep proved to be quite capable in the rough terrain and it can handle some serious off-roading. The ground clearance is good but still, the front lip panel manages to touch the ground. The brakes are quite effective and offer strong stopping power.

Jeep Compass Safety

The Jeep Compass comes loaded with safety equipment such as 6 airbags, All-Speed Traction Control System (TCS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), ABS, Isofix seat mounts, Electronic Roll Mitigation, Hill Start Assist, etc. One of the biggest questions for the Compass’ success in India is the after sales and poor service network across the country. The American carmaker is setting up new dealerships but currently, there are very few of them in India. Since the Compass is locally produced, we expect relatively affordable spare parts and maintenance costs.

Jeep Compass Bottomline

FCA has made a huge effort for getting the Jeep brand in India and especially setting up the Compass project in India for making it the manufacturing hub for right-hand drive export markets. The SUV is quite capable and feels good to drive too. It also comes with a reasonable amount of equipment, however, there are some missing features for a car belonging to this segment. It will be interesting to see the price point in which it is being offered and how it is positioned against the competition in the Indian market. If priced attractively, the Jeep Compass is one SUV which will pull people from both smaller and bigger SUVs as it offers the best of both worlds.
